in toronto, canada, batay-csorba architects (BCA) has realized a three-story dwelling that pays homage to both the local vernacular of the city and the italian heritage of the clients. designed as a ‘place of refuge’ for a retired couple, ‘high park residence’ focuses on wellbeing, mobility and convenience while creating sculptural spatial experiences.

BCA‘s design begins with one simple architectural motif: the vault. linking back to ancient roman architecture and paying tribute to the past traditions of the clients, the design team adopted the vault and transformed it into a contemporary architectural expression. from the front façade, this curved geometry extends throughout the domestic space and helps delimit different functions of the program by creating unique atmospheres.

the main elevation is shaped by three key design intentions: firstly, the textured brick relates to toronto’s history of masonry detailing; secondly, the negative space on the façade provides a convenient carport for the couple to access; and thirdly, the curved entryway makes reference to the portico, which is a covered walkway traditionally seen across italy. furthermore, this subtraction also gives the house its own identity and helps break up what would otherwise be a very monolithic volume.

the house is split over three levels: the basement, first floor, and second floor. upon entering, residents arrive into a linear ‘bar’, which, running adjacent to the vault, houses all the circulation and services. this narrow space then opens out into the first floor’s expansive and airy living spaces. here, the barrel vault connects the kitchen, dining, and living areas while peeling back in the center to reveal a double-height space, allowing natural light from a skylight above to flood into the deep and narrow lot.

the second floor is sliced into rooms connected by bridges. this allows natural daylight to reach each space and the first floor below. this level hosts the master bedroom suite, a second bedroom, study, and laundry room. in the basement, there’s also a separate bedroom, shower room, kitchen, and living space for visiting guests.
