bee breeders unveils the winners of ‘iceland volcano museum’ competition

bee breeders has shared the results of its latest architecture competition as a part of its first country-based series. the international call asked participants to design a museum near hverfjall volcano in iceland’s dimmuborgir region. the brief looked for a multi-purpose exhibition hall with a café and information space, as a landing point for visitors to the volcano. the winning projects, which you can read more about below, were chosen by the jury as they work well to connect to the stark, yet stunning, landscape of hverfjall, without artificially attempting to mimic it.

1st prize winners: balint iszak, csenge gyorgyi

first prize was awarded to balint iszak and csenge gyorgyi from new zealand. their project, ‘the windows of hverfjall’, includes an experiential entry sequence for the visitor, and incorporates a sunken floor plan that serves two functions. it allows the sightline of arriving visitors to remain uninterrupted, as well as endowing them with the sense of being partially submerged within the ground.

the second place prize and the student award were won by christian kamp and adrian hildrum from the royal danish academy of fine arts, school of architecture in denmark. their ‘crater II’ project takes on the rock formations of the site and includes subterranean structures that match the gothic settings.
