‘smith residence’, located on the coast of costa rica, forms a sanctuary retreat near the caribbean sea. designed by benjamin garcia saxe, the environmentally sound family home is based on the principles behind collecting and shedding rain water. temperature control is achieved through cross ventilation, ensuring that no air conditioning is required, while large overhangs protect the interior from the region’s hot sun. the project comprises lessons learned from the area’s vernacular architecture, incorporating local craftsmanship and ethically sourced materials. each part of the home establishes a close relationship with the natural environment, with large terraces offering areas for relaxation and hospitality. open-plan living accommodation is found at the second level, providing elevated views across the lush landscape.
