79&park, the residential complex in stockholm planned by bjarke ingles group (BIG) back in 2015 (see designboom’s previous coverage here) is now complete and will open for public viewings on november 11, 2018. the project has been developed in collaboration with oscar properties as an extension of the royal national city park that lays in front of it, incorporating a succession of green terraces on top of its cubic structure.

designboom was in stockholm to get a first look at 79&park, where bjarke ingels and oscar engelbert, CEO of oscar properties, presented the newly completed building.

BIG has combined cedar wood and glass for 79 & park’s façade, establishing a strong connection with the surrounding nature. in addition to the private and common balconies and terraces that offer residents unrestricted views, the project also includes several areas at ground level that are open to the general public. the residential complex has been developed as a ‘pixelated’ structure, whose unevenly extruded units house 168 apartments with different layouts. tactile materials such as oak floors, granite ceramic bathrooms, and stone kitchens continue the sense of nature internally, while floor-to-ceiling windows and balcony doors ensure plenty of daylight.

79&park is a porous residential building of 3.6m x 3.6m modules organized around an open green courtyard. the structure’s tallest corner is lifted up to 35 meters in order to maximize the inflow of natural daylight as well as views. the modules cascade down to the building’s lowest profile at just 7 meters, gradually extending the wooden development into the park. all dwellings have access to private and shared roof terraces. this terraced landscape features a rich variety of plants — hardy perennials, trees, and bushes are sprinkled across the rooftops, appearing green and leafy throughout the different seasons.

’79&park is conceived as an inhabitable landscape of cascading residences that combine the splendors of a suburban home with the qualities of urban living: the homes have private outdoor gardens and penthouse views of the city and gärdet,’ explains bjarke ingels, BIG’s founding partner. ‘the communal intimacy of the central urban oasis offers peace and tranquility while also giving the residents a feeling of belonging in the larger community of 79&park. seen from a distance, 79&park appears like a manmade hillside in the center of stockholm.’

the completion of the project coincides with a one day event that also includes the inauguration of another development commissioned by oscar properties — OMA’s ‘norra tornen’. ‘I had four ‘dream architects’ when I started oscar properties 14 years ago; the world’s leading architects who I knew had the ability to take stockholm’s cityscape to a new level,’ concludes oscar engelbert, CEO and founder of oscar properties. ‘we have already managed to get three of them here and today we inaugurate 79&park by bjarke ingels/BIG and norra tornen by reinier de graaf/OMA. this is a great day, not just for oscar properties but also for stockholm. as far as I know a city has never inaugurated two buildings by two world-famous architects on the same day.’
