BIG's 'cactus towers' will neighbor a new IKEA in central copenhagen

bjarke ingels group is set to build a pair of residential towers in copenhagen as part of a new development that also includes an IKEA store and a huge hotel. the site, which is being masterplanned by fellow danish firm dorte mandrup arkitekter, is located in kalvebod brygge – a waterfront area in the vesterbro district of the capital city. the complex is topped with a park that connects a 1,250-room hotel to the BIG-designed ‘cactus towers’, so-called as a result of their protruding floorplates and spiky silhouettes.

dorte mandrup’s masterplan positions BIG’s two ‘cactus towers’ at one end of the elongated plot, standing at heights of 80 and 60 meters respectively. both structures feature balconies and terraces on each storey, and between them contain 500 ‘youth rooms’ averaging 30 square meters in size. according to magasinet KBH, local authorities have already approved the construction of the new IKEA, while the remainder of the site could be complete by the end of 2019.
