BIG designs one of the most ambitious high-rises in berlin

Designed by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), the ‘EDGE East Side Berlin‘ high-rise office tower is currently under construction. In recent years, the ambitious project has passed through extensive discussions and massive protests by some groups and activists against its implementation. However, it is designed with careful and conscientious application of leading sustainability practices, and it is conceived to be ‘one of the healthiest’ skyscrapers in Germany.

Located on central Warschauer street, which acts as a bridge between two of Berlin’s most lively and artistic suburbs (Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg), the tower will rise up 142 meters, creating a new architectural landmark for the cosmopolitan city. The project’s striking facade is clad in generous amounts of glazing, offering sweeping views of the Berlin skyline. Designed to be mainly used by Amazon, it takes the unofficial name of ‘Amazon Tower’.BIG's new landmark for berlin is now under construction after controversial debates connecting two of Berlin’s most vibrant and artistic suburbs: Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg | all images by EDGE tech

BIG’s design Promotes sustainability and well being

Designed by the world-renowned firm Bjarke Ingels and constructed by the company EDGE Technologies, the high-rise employs an innovative and breathable architecture that fosters sustainability and well-being. The project uses circular products and VOC-free materials, as well as world-class energy management. In its interior, the building will host over 65,000 sqm of office space, serviced by 14 elevators, including eight innovative double-deck elevators by KONE. These can hit a speed of 21 km/h, taking only 20 seconds to reach the rooftop from the ground floor.

According to the development company, the final design incorporates contemporary urban requirements and natural elements to ‘create airy spaces that energize and replenish’. EDGE East Side is part of a new wave of healthy buildings that embrace the idea that offices should not only serve a function but engage the communities that surround them. Thus, its transparent design creates user-centered spaces inviting visitors and pedestrians to enter and discover. ‘We see design and technology as essential to creating workspaces that embrace sustainability while boosting the wellbeing of all.’
