in the running against his former mentor, rem koolhaas, danish architect bjarke ingels is the second contender for a major redevelopment of the miami beach convention center in the southern sunshine state of florida. the area in question encompasses the convention center building,
home to myriad seminal events like art basel miami, in addition to the surrounding urban block. in collaboration with developer portman CMC,
west 8 planning and landscape as well as cirque du soleil and the bal harbor shops, the proposal seeks to densify the area with a network of
prismatic structures linked by ribbons and folded planes of greenery. capitalizing on the ideal weather conditions of the area, the masterplan
calls for shaded plazas and promenades that integrate existing canals and posits new landscape insertions. while the original proposal entailed
replacing the historic jackie gleason theater, both competition teams have sought to preserve and subtly renovate the beloved building.
