bjarke ingels group/ BIG has unveiled plans for a new 18-story hotel named after danish fairy tale writer hans christian andersen, situated inside the tivoli gardens amusement park in copenhagen. drawing from the archetypal architecture of tivoli, the whimsical structure resembles a pagoda, while it will be covered in lush gardens and greenery and generate as small an environmental footprint as possible.

BIG partners bjarke ingels and david zahle together with tivoli CEO lars liebst revealed the H.C. andersen hotel as part of a larger transformation and pedestrianization of the tivoli garden’s main entrance by urbanists from GEHL. the project consists of refurbishing and re-purposing the 1893 tivoli castle, renovating the 1883 panorama pavilion and building the new 18-storey pagoda vis-à-vis copenhagen city hall.

‘tivoli is a unique oasis of lush gardens and whimsical architecture in the center of copenhagen,’ notes bjarke ingels, founding partner & creative director at BIG, ‘a truly cosmopolitan neighborhood in the heart of the danish capital, tivoli’s cultural and bio-diversity is unlike any other place in copenhagen. with a renovation of the 1983 tivoli castle and the addition of a new building, we have attempted to capture and accentuate the character of the existing castle, creating a new typology inspired by tivoli’s archetypical architecture. a hybrid between the garden’s pagodas, pavilions and towers, our proposal builds a bridge between the city’s history and present – the nearby rundetårn and axel towers – as well as the city’s archive of unrealized dreams. past, present and fantasy unified in the heart of copenhagen.’
