bjarke ingels-designed LEGO house takes shape ahead of september opening

LEGO has announced that its bjarke ingels-designed experience center — the ‘LEGO house’ — will open its doors to the public on september 28, 2017. located at the center of billund, denmark, the ‘home of the brick’ will offer a range of creative experiences for visitors from around the world. the venue includes paid attractions as well as experiences that are free and open to the public. approximately 250,000 guests are expected annually, with around 2,500 visitors on peak days.

designed by bjarke ingels group, the building comprises 21 white bricks stacked on top of one other, crowned by an oversized 2×4 LEGO block named the ‘keystone’. the enormous bricks create space for indoor activities, while simultaneously providing sheltered public space. ‘the building itself reflects what LEGO play and the LEGO values are all about,’ explains jesper vilstrup, general manager, LEGO house. ‘the LEGO brick has been incorporated into the architecture in a simple, but ingenious way, and visualizes the systematic creativity that lies at the very core of all LEGO play.’

the ground level includes a store, three restaurants, conference facilities, and a 2,000 square meter public square. above, the first and second storeys feature four play zones arranged according to color: red is creative, blue is cognitive, green is social, and yellow is emotional. the company’s story will be told in the history collection located in the basement, while the masterpiece gallery — which includes fan creations — will be located at the uppermost level. non-paying guests are able to walk to the top of the building to enjoy views from the outdoor terraces.

LEGO house is a manifestation of the very essence of the LEGO idea,’ continues jesper vilstrup. ‘this will be an amazing place where LEGO fans, their families and friends can experience — or re-experience — the playfulness of the LEGO universe. all activities are related to our philosophy that creative play promotes innovation. LEGO house will enable us to offer both adult and young guests the chance of stimulating both creativity and learning.’ construction got underway in early 2014, with LEGO house set to be officially opened on september 28, 2017. see designboom’s previous coverage of the project here.
