copenhill, the bjarke ingels group-designed waste-to-energy plant that doubles as a sports complex, has been documented in new images by hufton + crow. the architectural photographers took the atmospheric images while recently shooting in copenhagen. copenhill, also known as ‘amager bakke’, completed in 2019 after breaking ground in 2013. hufton + crow’s images detail the progress that the site has made in the meantime, with the structure immersed in greenery and the world’s tallest climbing wall scaling its façade.

designed alongside landscape architecture firm SLA, bjarke ingels group conceived copenhill as a piece of public infrastructure with ‘intended social side-effects’. due to its location on the waterfront, where raw industrial facilities have become the site for extreme sports, from wakeboarding to go-kart racing, the new power plant adds skiing, hiking, and rock climbing to the growing list of recreational activities. however, the internal facilities integrate the latest technologies in waste treatment and energy production.

as a power plant, copenhill is so clean that we have been able to turn its building mass into the bedrock of the social life of the city — its façade is climbable, its roof is hikeable, and its slopes are skiable,’ said bjarke ingels when the project opened. the project also includes the highest viewing plateau in the city and a tree-lined running trail designed by SLA. this green roof also helps create a biodiverse landscape that simultaneously absorbs heat, removes air particulates, and minimizes stormwater runoff. see here for designboom’s previous coverage of the project, and see other buildings photographed by hufton + crow here.
