the first step of the project involved assessing the original building and figuring out how to optimize the space. with an existing layout that wasted space due to the position of the structure, the architect decided to connect new spaces and create a more efficient plan that maximizes natural light and the floor area, while keeping some of the original building frame.

the distinctive feature of the building is the terrace that is covered by the façade in front of the house and appears almost to float. the design team chose a translucent elevation to cover the front porch on the 2nd floor, which was originally the roof of the garage, and increase the volume by adding a new protrusion into the balcony area. when looking from the outside, the translucent façade is concealed by a geometric wood layer.

this translucent façade changes the look of the original building, making it more modern and affording a greater level of privacy to the residents as the elements can be opened or closed. when all the windows are closed it will be transparent, with only a little movement being seen from the outside. when opened, the façade helps to create an airy interior that connects to the outdoor environment.

the indoor spaces are designed around the concept of bringing the personality and lifestyle of the owners into the house. therefore, curves are used to soften the hard shape, adding more variety to the architecture. the materials have also been selected to meet various needs while still representing the character of the client.
