located in the center of saraburi province, thailand, ‘baan priggang’ by bodinchapa architects is a mixed use building combining a house with a family business producing curry paste. the thai architecture practice has reused materials of the original, decayed building in the new construction, which combines two main textures in its façade: wood and grey-tone brick. each of the two signifies a different use within the project, while the color tone of curry paste marks the location of the manufacturing area.bodinchapa architects clads thai house + family business building in brick and wood façadeall images by witsawarut kekina

in ‘baan priggang’, bodinchapa architects has renovated the owner’s exisiting wooden house, which included a building on the side where the household curry business took place. ‘the building conditions are deteriorated and ineffective in use to be the area that is both residential and able to support the business in the future effectively,’ explains the thai studio. original materials have been reused in the construction of the new building as much as possible, creating a connection with the project’s history. exterior of bodinchapa architects' house + family business building in thailand

the kitchen marks the backbone of the new structure, connecting the living area with the curry paste production zone. in the future, the kitchen will also help support the coffee bar, another family business the owner is planning. used to divide the different functions of the building, the main staircase is designed as an open space up to the second floor, while it is topped with an opening on the roof to allow natural light to descend into the center of the building.curved surfaces in the exterior of bodinchapa architects' house + family business building in thailand

bodinchapa architects has used the visual qualities of curry paste as the main design reference for the project, ‘because it’s something that tells the story of the family well and also has an interesting dimension,’ as the studio explains. the architecture of the building combines mortar, grey-tone brick, and wood, which are used to clearly separate the different functions. curved surfaces in the façade add to the distinct character of the building, while allowing it to blend harmoniously with the surrounding streetscape.brick and wood facade in bodinchapa architects' house + family business building in thailand
