bogdan ciocodeica studio has completed the renovation of ‘apartment LC‘ in romania’s capital bucharest. the building dates back to the 1930s and in the past 80 years, the space has retained it’s original layout and finishes. however, the new owners – architecture and design enthusiasts – required alterations to the existing interior to meet their requirements. the design concept behind the new intervention holds on to the intrinsic character of the space by retaining many of the original elements. the internal functions are reorganized, although due to structural issues, the actual layout of the walls have not been altered.

the original layout of the apartment was composed of two different areas. the main living functions were composed of the main entrance, living room, dining room and master bedroom with bathroom, while the smaller secondary areas comprised of the kitchen and maid’s room, with its own entrance and bathroom. the new functional layout designed by bogdan ciocodeica erases the functional differentiation between the segregated parts and integrates all the spaces in one single scheme. by including the kitchen within the main living area, a more social and contemporary way of living is created.

the former service quarter of the apartment has been transformed into a small home office, convenient for everyday use while being discreetly separated from the rest of the apartment. the main functional and aesthetic feature of the project consists in the fluidity of the daytime spaces. architecturally, the contemporary character lies in the reinterpretation of the original values and materials. the old, but renovated, windows, doors and heaters are matched with the new hardwood flooring. the vibrant combination of the original and new tiling, brass and mirror finishes and signature furniture pieces, results in a beautifully contemporary living space.
