envisioned for a rural site in upstate new york, ‘house for an artist’ is designed by bosetti-desjardins to create a strong presence amid the surrounding rural landscape. given its three clearly defined functions – residential, studio and gallery – the proposal is conceptualized as three separate volumes, which are then linked together under one roof.

the largest mass contains the main living quarters. within this volume, an open-plan living, dining and kitchen space can be found on the ground floor, with a staircase leading to a master bedroom suite on the upper level. arranged at approximately 45 degrees from the residence is the second rectilinear mass, which houses the gallery.

in between these two rectilinear volumes is an oval-shaped structure, which comprises the artist’s studio. the composition of the three structures creates a void in between that provides an intimate courtyard, allowing each function to spill out onto the shared space.

the proposed architecture balances between being separated yet connected. conceived as the restrained composition of three functions, distinct in purpose, the separate masses are also connected by the central courtyard, the continuous roof structure and the engawa that lines the rectilinear volumes.

large precast concrete panels make up the structure of the proposal and also provide a rhythmic facade to the main house and studio. these black-colored elevations are punctured by large floor-to-ceiling windows that offer views of the surrounding rural landscape and bring natural light deep into the plan. on the upper level, an irregular circle connects each structure as a subtle nod to the artist’s oeuvre.
