wienerberger honors architects with brick award 2024

Wienerberger’s Brick Award is an internationally established award, honoring creativity in brick architecture. Launched in 2004, this biannual event underscores the company’s commitment in celebrating the aesthetic and functional aspects of the building material. On June 6, 2024, over 200 participants and experts of the industry gather at the Museum of Applied Arts (MAK) in Vienna for the unveiling of the most impactful projects that participated in the independent award competition. Following the ceremony, a symposium convenes, where global experts, including Jennifer Beningfield, Gabriela Carrillo, Jens Linnet and Boonserm Premthada explore the role of brick in architecture and address ecological and social challenges.

supporting creative brick solutions beyond company walls

Wienerberger represents ecological responsibility in the building industry as a leading provider of sustainable solutions across the entire building envelope with a focus on both new construction and refurbishment, as well as infrastructure for water and energy management. While the company serves as the host of the Brick Award, the winners are independently selected by a jury of renowned architects, which changes with every award.

‘As we have fully embraced innovation within Wienerberger, we also aim to support it outside of our company. To that end, the Brick Award shines a spotlight on architects who found new solutions to today’s construction challenges, while also demonstrating the vast untapped potential of brick for creative solutions,’ says Heimo Scheuch, CEO of Wienerberger AG.

brick award followed by international symposium

Out of 743 submissions from 54 countries, the international jury evaluated the entries across five categories: Feeling at home, Living together, Working together, Sharing public spaces, and Building outside the box. Each of these encompasses a range of architectural applications, spanning from traditional clay blocks, facing bricks, and roof tiles to innovative implementations of clay pavers and ceramic facade panels. Winners within each category, including two Grand Prize recipients, will be announced and celebrated alongside the 50 nominated projects during the Brick Award 2024 ceremony.

In addition to celebrating architectural achievements, Wienerberger aims to foster discussions on the future of brick architecture. A symposium titled ‘Sustainable Horizons: Advancing Architecture Through Scalable Innovations’ follows the award ceremony on June 7, 2024. Through thought-provoking ideas, visions and projects, the international speakers spark discussion on the challenges confronting the architecture world and the solutions necessary to ensure a sustainable future.
