brick perforations and projections characterize a house in new delhi designed by RLDA

‘brick house’ by indian architecture studio RLDA is a single story residence in new delhi that demonstrates the different spatial experiences that can be created using the humble brick. occupying the southern portion of a large 6,780 sqm plot, the dwelling comprises four bedrooms as well as multiple courtyards and a lush outdoor pool.

brick house is made up of four structures: two residential blocks, a circular guard room, and a small pump room. each volume is built primarily from brick, giving the property its character and its name. RLDA differentiates the structures by applying five different coursing details with varying perforations and projections, which bring a textured look to the architecture while helping to keep the walls cool by casting shadows.  

the two residential blocks are connected by a steel trellis, whose shadows echo the shadows cast by the brick walls. three small trees puncture the steel trellis and this circle motif is continued with a large circular courtyard located at the heart of residential block A. in this way, RLDA connects the residents of brick house to the landscape by mediating the solid structures with open space and the outdoors.

at the end of the steel trellis, there’s a large patio area and swimming pool, which also serves as a water reservoir for evaporative cooling. after the pool and patio, there’s a small pump room and a large garden with planters and a manicured green lawn. and finally, at the end of the lawn on the northern edge of the site, there is a circular guardroom, which acts as an architectural folly nestled between the trees.
