bernardes arquitetura designed the new headquarters of the brincante institute located in são paulo, brazil, a few meters away from the already existing institute founded back in 1992. the term ‘brincante’ signifies a type of popular multi-artist of the brazilian northeast who sings, dances, and plays instruments. the program of this new headquarters includes an auditorium for approximately 80 people, a rehearsal room, an administrative area, and enough storage room for musical instruments, costumes, and props.

in this new addition, bernardes arquitetura aimed to emphasize the direct communication between the building and the street, strengthening its relationship to the neighborhood of vila madalena, where the institute has been located for decades. this communication is translated through the vertical brise-soleils; they allow the transition between public and private spaces and aim at exposing pedestrians to the cultural environment within the institute.

the designers located the box office and an access tunnel to the auditorium at the main entrance creating a flexible open space. on the left side of the space, a helical staircase connects three levels: first floor, mezzanine, and upper deck. the mezzanine serves as a transition and gathering space connected to the auditorium and as an extension of the first floor foyer. it allows direct access to the seats located on the upper level and to a bridge created over the stage area.

the bridge expands the capacity of the auditorium and enables artistic interventions in two levels while giving access to a garden on the back of the stage. meeting and dressing rooms, an office, a small kitchen, and a multipurpose room take place on the upper deck which opens up to a large glass window that is partially shaded by the wooden skin of the building and by the slanted roof.
