californian architect doub burdge and local builder nate garnero have developed fire-resistant temporary housing that repurposes shipping containers. in response to the woolsey fire that burned across southern california in november 2018, the pair came together to address post-fire housing needs with ‘buhaus’, an elevated take on shipping container architecture.

buhaus is a combination of ‘malibu’ and ‘bauhaus’, characterizing their design with linear and geometrical forms and feature savvy design. in addition, burdge and garnero wanted to use fire-resistant materials and incorporate off-grid capabilities. exterior materials, walls, flooring, and hardware are personalized from a selection of finishes that create a range of budget-conscious and luxurious possibilities.

at 160 sq feet, buhaus is comfortable, customizable and compact. it includes a bedroom and bathroom space and is filled with smart space-saving solutions and custom cabinetry. buhaus doors may be secured for privacy and weather conditions, and by day panels open to reveal a shaded wood deck as well as an outdoor shower.

it is divided into two areas that include a multi-purpose main space and a bathroom. in the former, cabinetry boasts a hideaway murphy bed that creates office space with a drop-down desk when disguised. meanwhile, under-counter storage and a refrigerator offer some space for keeping personal belongings and perishables.

the buhaus starts at $96,000 and can be outfitted to go off-grid with alternative energy. the first buhaus will be available for preorder in february, and will start shipping out later this year.
