cadence architects has completed a residence in the indian city of bangalore that has been conceived as a continuous loop that rises up from the ground. known as ‘elastica’, the scheme has been designed as a ‘fluid events space’, forming a comfortable retreat amid the dense urban setting. the architecture’s folded concrete slab not only demarcates the plan along a split section, but also forms the stairway — connecting various levels as one continuous surface. in turn, the slab animates adjacent spaces, creating an engaging property with a range of different environments.

cadence architects positioned the living room at an elevated level overlooking an open kitchen-diner. four bedrooms are organized along the loop at various levels. a movie room in the basement is situated at one end, with an open-air terrace at the other. the interior design seeks to further accentuate the sense of fluidity, with cabinets, beds, and ledges all holistically intertwined with the building’s architecture. malleable materials such as ferroconcrete and solid surface acrylic have been used to create these integrated objects.

since the shorter side of the house faces south, the architects re-conceived the traditional brise soleil as a more organically-shaped element intended to reduce heat. the longer façade, oriented to the east, is more open, allowing abundant daylight to enter the dwelling. the glazed ground level supports the larger mass above, a gesture that makes the upper volume appear to gracefully levitate.
