carmody groarke's windermere jetty museum documented by hufton + crow

photographers hufton + crow have documented the new windermere jetty museum, which opened to the public earlier in 2019. designed by london-based firm carmody groarke, the venue is located on the shores of the lake district national park in north west england. the new museum rehouses the institution’s internationally significant boat collection within a variety of exhibition spaces that tell the stories of the vessels’ construction and use on the lake. meanwhile, outside the building, a wet dock allows for the display of boats on water.

carmody groarke’s design breaks down the scale of the museum into a cluster of smaller pitched roof volumes. ‘extended canopies distinguish the function of each building as part of the overall museum ensemble and extend the inside spaces of the building with all-weather shelter into the landscape,’ explains the design team. ‘oxidized copper cladding covers all external surfaces and consolidates the appearance of a collection of buildings working together as a single museum.’

the institution, which reopened under the name windermere jetty: museum of boats, steam and stories, called for a design that placed an emphasis on visitor experience. a park landscape creates connections among people, boats, and water, while an on site gravel-extraction plant has been transformed into an active boatyard that accommodates a conservation program. see more photography by hufton + crow on designboom here.
