portuguese studio carvalho araújo has created ‘galeria mário sequeira’, a contemporary art gallery located in braga, portugal. realized as a subtle gesture, the design looks to preserve the principles and identity of the existing site, imposing a feeling among the visitors rather than an apparent built form.

partially submerged into the land, the structure maintains a visual silence on the surface, concealing for the most part the scale and organization of space that lies below ground. inside, a simple program is organized around a series of circulation zones, which enrich the character and the experience within the building. the interior remains relatively enclosed except for a glazed facade on the east side of the structure. cutting through the earth, the opening looks to establish a connection with the surrounding environment while introducing light into the network of underground spaces.
