GRX arquitectos unites two apartments for 'casa duquesa' in granada

located in granada, spain, this project by GRX arquitectos and jose maría rueda romero involves the renovation of two separate apartments to create one spacious dwelling. inserting new interventions within the existing building fabric, ‘casa duquesa’ is a beautiful blend of historic architectural features and contemporary living space.

when developing the design GRX arquitectos and jose maría rueda romero were challenged with the impossibility of intervening on a large part of the existing space. to open up the space, they removed a partition in the main living room to create a huge double height area. here, a new piece of furniture has been integrated, which contains the home’s library and kitchen without changing the position of the old facilities. in this way, parts of the old structure can be seen united with the new intervention, effectively layering architecture from different eras.

in addition to fusing the old architecture with the new, ‘casa duquesa’ also plays with ceiling heights to differentiate spatial experiences. from the double-height social space residents move to the cozier kitchen space, and upstairs, there is a mezzanine level that provides the perfect quiet place to read.
