the renovation of the musée carnavalet in paris

french practice chatillon architects collaborated with snøhetta and nathalie crinière agency to complete the renovation of musée carnavalet in paris. devoted to the history of the french capital, the museum first opened in 1880 and includes two private residences of the 16th and 17th centuries, architectural remains from the 19th century, and an additional building that links the whole together. over the years, however, successive additions and remodelings caused an inadequate functioning for present-day use. the objective of this project was therefore to propose a new layout while maintaining the original character of the museum.

upgrading the museum’s current tour layout

in 2015, chatillon architectes’ team was selected to direct the partial restoration and redevelopment of the site, and to redesign its interior in contemporary fashion — making it accessible to all members of the public. partnering with snøhetta for the architectural design and nathalie crinière agency for the scenography, the team restored certain roofings and façades, and reconfigured the existing spatial layout to include a new museographic itinerary. as result, the musée carnavalet features today a reception area, pathways that accommodate an increased number of visitors, as well as temporary and permanent exhibition rooms — some of which sit in the cellars that were once inaccessible to the public.musee carnavalet 5
