new apple store in chicago is topped with a giant macbook roof

ever since plans for the project were announced in 2015, there has been much intrigue regarding the design of chicago’s riverside apple store. conceived by long-time collaborators foster + partners — the firm responsible for the recently-opened cupertino campus — initial renderings illustrated a glazed riverside box, topped with a sleek roof canopy. however, with construction now well underway, workers on-site added a motif that turned the project’s architecture into something a lot more familiar…

as reported by DNA chicago, construction crews placed a large apple logo on the roof of the new store, transforming the riverside structure into a giant macbook. however, less than 60 minutes later, the logo was removed. located on pioneer square, at the north michigan avenue shopping district, the new store will comprise a total floor area of 20,000 square feet spread between two floors. once inside, the store cascades down the existing steps of the square to the footpath, creating a transparent double-height space.
