mumbai-based planet 3 studios has designed the new campus for chitkara university school of management informed by the spatial ideas of le corbusier’s chandigarh. located just outside the famed modernist’s visionary city, the proposed home of the school of management adopts corbusian principals of programmatic clustering, proximity, green spaces and responsiveness to climate and context, albeit within the frame of 3D honeycombed lattice. the first planned city after the 1947 partition of india, the city-complex is marked by a rigidity that resists the awesome sprawl of mumbai and has since become an object of architectural curiosity marked by static rules.
the chitkara proposal appears mindful of its context, what with the grouping of program and access to ample green space; however, the plan forgoes a linear grid in favor of a more circuitous network of webbed volumes. in lieu of strictly orthogonal 800 by 1200 meter blocks, an arrangement of circular plans was translated into a 3D voronoi diagram, a tessellation of convex polygons generated by the regions around a specified set of points. the voronoi web is a computational reinterpretation of the corbusian grid and is manifested in a honeycombed steel frame structure. designed to last a decade while a larger structure is constructed, the school would be clad in acrylic planes that extend beyond the roof line and pay further homage to the modernist master with dashes of color.
