in a rural area of new south wales, local practice CHROFI has designed two concrete and stone structures that are conceived as ruins amid the picturesque landscape. the buildings are part of a venture entitled ‘lune de sang’ which will see a former dairy transformed into a sustainably harvested forest.

‘the vision is exceptional in that rather than planting a fast growing crop, various hardwoods of the region have been chosen to establish a rainforest landscape that will take generations to mature’, explain the architects. ‘the hardwoods will be tended to maturity and then selectively harvested, the long lifespan of the trees meaning a wait of between 50 and 300 years before the various species fully mature.’

working closely with the client, the design references the rainforest’s unhurried growth with the structures responding to the notion of a 300 year life-cycle. both sheds offer a sense of permanence, appearing as unearthed buildings retrofitted for comfortable habitation through glass and steel detailing.
