el salvadorian firm cincopatasalgato has shared with us images of their casa costa azul, along the coast near san salvador. the home blends vernacular elements with modern designs and materials in an open-air concept that suits the temperate climate perfectly. a rather recognizable thatched roof and timber structure serves as the center piece of the design unifying the various components that sit underneath or inside of it. framing an open courtyard containing the kitchen and living areas, the center of the traditional roof is punctured over a small garden creating a large skylight flanked by a direct line of sight from ocean to the other end of the site.

the surrounding enclosed structures offer privacy within the bedrooms that contain direct access to exterior spaces and gardens so that no matter how enclosed you may be, you always have the ability to experience the exterior.  a more contemporary timber-framed cube with glass facades disrupts the thatched form serving as a closed living area supported above the ground. the home enjoys natural light in every corner and fresh air through every space, lending to a lifestyle closely tied with the tropical outdoors.
