THREE PROJECTS FOR CONCÉNTRICO 08

International architecture and design festival Concéntrico has unveiled the winning projects from the three competitions for participation in its eighth edition. Taking place in Logroño, Spain, the annual event invites visitors to rethink the city and our environment through installations, exhibitions, lectures, performances, workshops and activities. This year’s open calls were aimed at the creation of a pavilion in Plaza Escuelas Trevijano and the interventions in Obispo Bustamante street, and in Viña Lanciano (La Rioja, Spain) + Quinta do Seixa (Douro, Portugal). ‘We are always looking for proposals that innovate in the way they propose to establish relationships between location, people and architecture. This social, sustainable and context-conscious component is very relevant in all the proposals we carry out,’ Concéntrico founder, Javier Peña Ibáñez, told designboom while discussing the international competitions.

The projects, which will form part of the eighth edition of the festival, to be held from 1 to 6 September 2022, have been selected after several previous meetings that ended on 28 and 29 March in joint sessions at the Official Association of Architects of La Rioja. The jury, made up of Iñaqui Carnicero, Marta Rincón, Iker Gil, Marta Vall-llossera, Amaya Cebrián, Mafalda Guedes, Ángel Carrero, Rebeca Castellano, Aurora León and Javier Peña, chose the three winning proposals and the finalists from among the 446 entries submitted. Discover the three winning projects below, and stay tuned for the full program.

Plaza Escuelas Trevijano: UNA MESA by AAA

The first winning project of Concéntrico 08 is a pavilion designed for the Plaza Escuelas Trevijano, which will mark the starting point for the routes and activities of the festival. Once the projects presented had been studied and the appropriate deliberations had taken place, it was decided that the winner would be ‘UNA MESA’ by AAA (Alejandro Lobo, Elías Martínez Ojeda, Federico Rodríguez) from Uruguay. Composed of a circular, geometric piece of wood, the versatile proposal has been selected for its representative character, which enhances the existing elements in the square. The table-like construction proposes a unique strategy in which the tree is integrated and reread in its context. ‘Its architecture, with an emphatic geometry, responds to the use of the pavilion as a landmark of the festival,’ notes the jury.

Viña Lanciano + Quinta do Seixo: El arquetipo de la casa by Collective X

For the first time, Concéntrico with Bodegas LAN, Sandeman and Sogrape proposed a competition with a double location that makes visible a similar reality in neighbouring countries, Spain and Portugal. Its focus is on the respect for the landscape, biodiversity and wine culture that occur in Viña Lanciano next to the river Ebro in La Rioja and in Quinta do Seixo next to the river Duero (Douro) in the North of Portugal. The winning proposal is titled ‘El arquetipo de la casa’, and has been designed by Collective X (Miguel Iván Hernández Cobos, Katarzyna Dominiak, Eduardo Romero García) from Mexico and Poland. The project was selected for its singularity and domestic character in dialogue with the landscape. Its large scale, combined with lightness in its construction, incorporates multiple views of the territory. ‘This monumentality in its exterior vision gives rise to small spaces that complete the intervention and its relationship with the context in which it is located.’

Calle Obispo Bustamante: A la mesa! by Ander López Alberdi and Sarai Olabarrieta Morales

The third competition called for an installation in Calle Obispo Bustamante, an area in Logroño where housing, institutional, administrative and educational buildings converge. This relationship between uses and flows makes the environment a space of opportunity to rethink the street as a central element of community life in cities. Titled ‘A la mesa!’, the winning project by Ander López Alberdi and Sarai Olabarrieta Morales from Spain was selected for its iconic and suggestive character. The continuous structure changes our usual perspective on the relationship between the street, the inner courtyard and the city. ‘Integrating public and private space through its performance, it proposes to remain and refers us to the imaginary of the domestic.’
