city3 + atelier starzak strebicki + laura muyldermans turn brussels' esplanade into a public, social space

in spring 2016, the european parliament (EP) commissioned a design for temporary creative street furniture and greenery for the esplanade solidarność 1980, the main thoroughfare that links the different buildings of the parliament campus in brussels. with ‘constellations’, instead of designing temporary furniture, city3 in collaboration with atelier starzak strebicki and laura muyldermans proposed the EP to invest in a set of 100 chairs, 10 tables, and 50 plants.

with the design concept becoming a research project, city3 + atelier starzak strebicki + laura muyldermans were authorized to arrange and test the chairs, tables and plants during one year in various configurations. throughout the year, the chairs, tables and plants, in a variety of colors avoiding any form of pre-definition, are re-arranged in various ways and installed in different parts of the esplanade. the designers turned the vast space into a fruitful scene in which the chairs and tables and the people using them become the actors.

the design aims to study the different ways the public interacts with the furniture and its surroundings

numerous scenarios of arranging objects were considered: in groups, in circles and along naturally perceived in the space lines

creating points of connection between objects remained one of the most important tasks for the designers
