french architect clément bacle has created ‘house of the in-between,’ which attaches a second dwelling to an existing residence in the city of rennes. given that the two houses are occupied by agreeable sisters, the center of the building, in-between either living unit, contains shared spaces. the new construction is a direct extension of the original structure, following the same roof pitch and typical shingles. however, black-stained douglas french wood on the added dwelling’s exterior walls contrasts the brick of the older side. the halves are divided by the communal slice, which is finished with glass panels on the roof and opens as a breezeway on the ground floor.

the 65 sqm addition is comprised of a small kitchen, TV/guest room, and bathroom on the ground floor, and a master suite on the upper level. the shared central room on the upper level is enclosed with a glass roof, while three glass panels in the floor to transmit light to the open walkway below.

the design prioritized the preservation of green spaces in the garden. to complement this, both living units offer large sliding doors opening onto outdoor concrete decks.
