in jalisco, a western mexican state bordering the pacific ocean, CoA arquitectura and estudio macias peredo have designed ‘casa chacala’, a coastal property immersed in nature. the two-storey dwelling is formed from a grid of columns and beams, topped with a palm thatched roof. the family residence includes a variety of ground level communal areas oriented towards the adjacent ocean, including an open living room that spills out onto a sheltered terrace and its adjoining pool.

a master bedroom at ground level is found towards the front of the home, surrounded with plantation that provides privacy while offering pleasant external views. in addition to the main ‘palapa’ — a traditional mexican shelter roofed with palm leaves — CoA arquitectura and estudio macias peredo integrate a secondary exterior patio to provide further space for outdoor living. a semi-open staircase leads to four further bedrooms upstairs.

the entire property is surrounded by a jungle of native vegetation. a palm stands at the entrance, while a huge fig tree helps dictate the scheme’s primary axis. the home has been configured to exist in a number of different ways. despite its open terraces and generous views, the dwelling also offers a great number of secluded areas for private residential living. hard-wearing natural materials establish a relaxed and informal atmosphere, conducive to living, resting, and contemplation.
