‘cabinette’ is a conceptual wattle and clay structure designed by CODA for the 2015 yeats summer event competition in sligo, ireland. the pavilion is composed of a gridded 9×9 matrix made with purple willow. each frame is filled with turf (clay), which is continuously burned throughout the summer to scent and provide warmth for poetry readings — yeats is in reference to poet W.B. yeats.

approach

what begins as a solid clay form, slowly disintegrates into a ghostly void. this was done in homage to yeat’s ‘the lake isle of innisfree’ writings, which describe visions of longing for nature from the orthogonal confines of the city. ‘cabinette’ aims to express the tension between urban and rural by combining both cube and cabin into a single hybrid. from one view, the cabin disappears within the cube; from another, the shape into the building.

the sound of lapping water is another component essential to yeat’s vision, and is translated to the pavilion’s water front location. the placement, aside from conceptual reasons, allows for easy transport and accessibility for festival goers.

due to the site’s ecological sensitivity — lake shore of lough gill & innisfree island — ‘cabinette’ docks on an integrated artificial pier. thus, the piece is temporary, lightweight (floats), and able to be prefabricated on the main land before transport and turf stocking. at the end of the event, the intervention can be towed back and removed using a basic boat-trailer.
