colin harper architect completes ecologyst headquarters

Colin Harper Architect has transformed an historic 1892 building in Victoria, Canada, into a modern multi-functional commercial space. Nestled within the industrial shell of the iconic Powerhouse Building, the space combines retail, warehouse, and factory functions amid the backdrop of lofty ceilings, whitewashed brick walls, and an abundance of natural light. Drawing from the prevailing industrial ambiance of the heritage structure, the project’s design integrates custom-crafted fixtures and millwork, where each element resonates with the character of the warehouse artifacts. This venture serves a dual purpose: setting the stage for customers to witness the production process of their garments firsthand while experiencing the essence of the Ecologyst brand’s dedication to local craftsmanship.

a gallery-like ambiance within an industrial shell

Originally conceived in Victoria, the sustainable fashion brand Ecologyst born made the decision to relocate its production facilities from overseas back to Canada in 2014. In 2021, Pacific Northwest-based Colin Harper Architect was commissioned to design a multi-faceted public-facing space for the label which would enhance visibility of the brand. The studio’s design concept seeks to preserve the essence of the original architectural structure’s heritage, while injecting a sleek vitality, resulting in an ambiance of wandering through an art gallery tucked within an industrial shell.

Stepping into the Ecologyst Headquarters, shoppers are greeted by an intimate foyer. Reminiscent of an introductory wall at an art exhibit, this space offers insights into the company’s background and its product range. Beyond, this transitions into a lofty warehouse space housing both the retail and production facilities. Taking advantage of the unique combination of these two typically disconnected programs, the proximity and lack of separation between them emphasizes the value Ecologyst places on transparency and ethical practices. While browsing product the product range, customers can overlook busy workers moving items, sewing, and cutting fabric.
