collective for climate to realize a net-zero carbon neighborhood for a cleaner paris

seeking to guide the iconic french capital into a greener future, the consortium ‘collective for climate’ plans the first even net-zero carbon neighborhood in paris. the consortium — comprising atelier georges, tatiana bilbao estudio, serie architects, and bond society — presents the proposal and the winning entry of the 2019 C40 ‘reinventing cities’ global competition. overall, the scheme stands as an ambitious effort toward the retrofitting of urban areas with flexible programming that can adapt to the needs of the city and shift between workspaces and housing.

collective for climate works closely with the city of paris to transform the porte de montreuil neighborhood into a pilot district for its net-zero carbon efforts. the future square and its surrounding buildings will showcase new ways of linking paris and its neighbors. porte de montreuil is situated along the eastern belt of paris and spans over 35 hectares. here, the project will introduce an estimated 60,000 square meters of new construction. the team is committed to reduce 85% of total emissions through innovative approaches and aims to go beyond carbon neutrality with the creation of a ‘carbon fund.’

the paris development will see net-zero carbon with the help of on-site geothermal and photovoltaic energy production. emissions will also be considerably reduced through the thoughtful selection of sustainable construction materials. 80% of the superstructure will be built of french cross-laminated timber (CLT) or stone and the entire façade will be composed of such bio-sourced materials as terracotta, bricks, and hemp. to further reduce carbon footprint during construction, 80% of the materials will be sourced from paris and its surroundings.
