graux & baeyens architecten has completed a single family home located just outside the belgian town of ghent. although situated on the former site of a castle destroyed during world war two, the structure’s pitched roof alludes to familiar rural buildings. the dwelling’s non-treated copper cladding will turn green over time, giving the project a natural and poetic impermanence.
large glass façades enable the architecture to form a relationship with the historic site, providing views out towards the ruins of the castle wall. the residence is envisioned as a pavilion where identical façades mean that the structure has no front or rear. internally, the ground floor comprises living accommodation, while a spiral staircase leads to the property’s bedrooms.
