vastudio’s archetype residences join cretan wood and stone with clay

Vastudio’s archetype honors Crete’s rich material traditions

Located in Malaxa, Chania, Crete, vastudio’s latest project, archetype, reflects a deep connection to its surroundings by honoring the island’s local archetypes and rich material traditions. Inspired by Crete’s architectural heritage, the design, intended for residential use, incorporates locally sourced wood, clay, and stone—anchoring the project in the Greek region’s identity while celebrating the timeless craftsmanship and authenticity of this unique locale.

Archetype reflects Greek island architecture in modern context

Central to the design by multidisciplinary design practice vastudio are the expansive openings that invite striking views of the Cretan mountains, Chania’s cityscape, and the Aegean Sea. This approach creates an open dialogue between architecture and nature. Shaded courtyards and terraces are carefully crafted to enhance the indoor-outdoor living experience, harmonizing modern comfort with traditional influences. This project showcases how local heritage and environmentally responsive design can inspire spaces that balance innovation and cultural respect.
