the 16th biennale architettura was opened in venice on may 26th, 2018, during which CROX has been invited to attend the exhibition ‘time space existence’ by european cultural center and GAA foundation. the studio’s latest work ‘liyang museum’ in jiangsu, china will be displayed in palazzo mora — the main hall of the biennale parallel exhibition. with the aim of promoting the desire of architecture, the biennale architettura is titled ‘freespace’. in ‘freespace’, a sense of urban symbiosis is formed through the communication between people and architecture. yvonne farrell and shelley mnnamara curated the exhibition and they thought the word freespace described a generosity of spirit and a sense of humanity which was the core of architecture design.

in 2016, c.r. lin, the director of chinese based studio CROX, curated the exhibition ‘youbang campus: 7+1 cohering the power of design’ in venice. with the concept of ancient songs, the project of this year’s biennale architettura shows the beauty of oriental melody, and finally completes a very progressive natural building. in order to let people, cross the park, the building is divided into two bodies. the lower body and the city park form the shape of mountain which becomes the functional part of museum. the upper body and the sky echo each other and are fused into a cloud-like shape for urban planning.

the functions of CROX’s liyang museum combine past, present and future into one spirit of space. two architectural bodies create a ‘freespace’ for citizens and constitute additional space for the city. people can feel the sunshine, air and plants. this area provides opportunity to let architecture communicate with the earth. on the basis of people, places, time and history, the architecture’s diversity, uniqueness and continuity actively maintain the relevance of local culture and become the permanent wealth of urban residents.

in addition to the model of the liyang museum, CROX also presented its concept film ‘floating melodies’ . in the film, views switching by architects c.r. lin and darcy chang convey a sense of wandering. the studio transfers beautiful melodies into architecture’s form and uses multiple perspectives to express walking experience. liyang museum constitutes the yearnings to city life and the concept of avant-grade nature. capturing all the weak information and extracting the touching moment and condensing it into entity to remold the nature with the experimental spirit. for a museum project in china, maximally releasing the space to the public with humble attitude, will activate people’s limitless imagination of ‘freespace’ in the future.
