david adjaye's residential skyscraper tops out in new york

‘130 william’, the much-anticipated residential skyscraper designed by david adjaye, has topped out in new york. serving as a distinct addition to manhattan’s iconic skyline, the luxury tower rises to a total height of approximately 800 feet (244 meters), or 66 stories. ‘in defining the design for 130 william I sought to celebrate new york city’s heritage of masonry architecture, referencing the historical architecture once pervasive upon one of the city’s earliest streets,’ adjaye explains. ‘130 william evokes the past, but it also has a forward-looking design which explores the new possibilities of urban, vertical living.’

130 william, which is being developed by real estate firm lightstone, features 242 residences with the top ten floors home to the penthouse and loggia residences. adjaye, working in collaboration with local architect hill west, was inspired to craft a building that pushes away from the typical commercial feel of glass and instead embraces new york’s history of classic stonework and lofts that once populated lower manhattan. as a result, the building is clad with a custom hand-cast façade with large-scale arched windows and bronze detailing.

framed by oversized bronze arched windows, the residences incorporate luxurious interior finishes — including bronze faucets, showerheads, accessories, and door handles, custom-designed by david adjaye himself. the generously-scaled interiors of the penthouse and loggia residences boast loft-like ceilings ranging from 11 to 14 feet (3.4-4.3m) that flow into expansive outdoor spaces with encompassing views. the loggia terraces wrap these residences from end to end, providing significant outdoor space starting at over 600 feet (183m) in the air. these specialty residences are also enhanced with unique finishes, like marble carved sink countertops and large marble carved soaking tubs.

130 william also offers residents an expansive collection of lifestyle and wellness amenities, including: a health club with full spa, infinity-edge swimming pool, cold and hot plunge pools, dry sauna and massage rooms, as well as a state-of-the-art fitness center with cool-down terrace, yoga studio, and basketball court. residents will also enjoy a private imax movie theater, golf simulator, resident lounge, club and game room, chef’s catering kitchen with a private dining area, children’s activity center, pet spa, outdoor terraces and a private rooftop observation deck located at the top of the building.

‘sir david adjaye is truly a visionary architect,’ says mitchell c. hochberg, president of lightstone. ‘he has a completely unique aesthetic that is refined yet bold and rooted in historical precedent. 130 william truly represents the approach of his mastery. our goal with 130 william was to create refined residences and with the building topping out we are excited to see it progress.’ prices for the residences range from approximately $1,300,000 for a one-bedroom to $20,000,000 for a four-bedroom full floor penthouse. see designboom’s previous coverage of the project here.
