after five and a half years of planning, financing, and negotiating, david beckham’s vision of bringing a football club to miami has taken a big step forward. on november 6 2018, the miami public voted in favor of building a 25,000-seat stadium as part of a complex that, if approved, will also feature a community park and public soccer facilities as well as office, retail, and commercial space. dubbed ‘miami freedom park & soccer village’, the development’s architecture has been carried out by arquitectonica.

although the vote does not guarantee that the development will go ahead, it is seen as a huge boost for the project. david beckham’s team will now negotiate specific terms with city officials before a definitive decision is made in due course. beckham serves as president of soccer operations for club internaćional de fútbol miami (or inter miami for short), and has been heavily involved in all aspects of the franchise’s development — from the color scheme to the club’s branding.

‘the crest was something that was really important to me,’ says beckham who tasked kimou meyer, executive creative director at doubleday & cartwright, with developing the design of inter miami’s badge. ‘I always gravitated to the old south american crests and that’s one thing that I thought really needed to go into this logo,’ continues the ex-england captain. ‘when we started working on the color palette, very quickly pink became obvious — if there’s one city in the world that can own pink, it’s miami,’ says meyer, who says the use of the eye-catching color is inspired by the city’s famous sunrises.

‘we started to study the different iconography of the city and the architecture, especially the art deco movement’, meyer explains, with the team eventually deciding on the great white heron — a bird native to miami — as the club’s symbol. the herons symbolize freedom, with their interlocked legs — which form the letter M — signifying the club’s ‘unbreakable unity’. meanwhile, the eclipse at the center of the design represents the club’s determination to ‘work day and night to realize our dreams’. stay updated with the club’s progress on inter miami’s official website here.
