after getting the go-ahead by the local council, the new ‘turner contemporary gallery‘ by david chipperfield architects, one of the largest spaces dedicated to art outside london, is planned to open to the public on 16 april 2011. located on a sea front in margate, england, the gallery’s site is a direct nod at british painter JMW turner, who was a regular visitor of the town.

‘the opening of turner contemporary marks the start of an extraordinary opportunity for margate and thanet to become one of the UK’s most compelling culture and tourism destinations,’ says john kampfner, chair of turner contemporary.

built on a plinth to protect against flooding, the gallery is comprised of six rectangular forms that interlock together, creating a strong sculptural presence on the water front. featuring a prominent silhouette, the series of apertures along the facade and roof enable the northern light to be brought into all the gallery spaces on the first floor level. the exterior is clad in white opaque glass, which is to reflect the nature of the building, its location and local light conditions.

the ground floor hosts a double height space to showcase works with a large, multi-functional space complete with an external terrace. environmentally controlled gallery spaces and a learning studio on the first floor level will have access to a balcony that cantilevers out over the lower gallery space. taking advantage of the dramatic setting, panoramic views to both the sea and the town are offered from the cafe and entrance area.
