british architect david chipperfield has just been announced as laureate of the 2013 praemium imperiale international art award for architecture. the prize is offered by the imperial family of japan to artists in painting, sculpture, architecture, music, and theatre/film, five areas of achievement not covered by the nobel prizes. it will be presented to chipperfield and the other laureates — italian arte povera painter michelangelo pistoletto; british sculptor antony gormley; spanish tenor and conductor plácido domingo and american film director, producer and screenwriter francis ford coppola — in tokyo on wednesday, october 16th. his imperial highness prince hitachi, honorary patron of the japan art association, will present each laureate with a gold medal and diploma in addition to 15 million yen (approximately 195,000 USD or 100,000 GBP).
