kidsuper store is an ode to nyc and a world of wonderment

Merging artistry and commerce, multidisciplinary design studio DE-YAN has designed the first KidSuper store in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, in collaboration with the designer behind the brand, Colm Dillane. The conceptually driven, experiential space captures the essence of the apparel brand, redefining retail by embracing its wild wonderment across a series of immersive physical and non-physical worlds.

An ode to NYC, the store embodies a laundromat, mini mart, and library — iconic elements that line the streets of the city. Beyond aesthetics, the laundromat offers alterations, the mini mart showcases collaborations, while the library inspires the next wave of creatives. Together, these physical and non-physical realms serve as gathering places that foster community, reflecting Dillane’s dedication to nurturing the next generation of artists.

de-yan and Colm Dillane craft experiential retail concept

Much has been written about the future of retail and the need for innovative shopping solutions and experiences. Studies have found that engaging content and personalized experiences have the highest impact on consumers’ purchasing decisions. The KidSuper store takes this trend to an artistic level that enhances the user experience and journey. In its physical form, DE-YAN’s design is inspired by the laundromats, mini marts, and libraries of NYC, while in its non-physical form, the three worlds are inherently gathering community hubs.

Within, there is an authentic cashier check-out station, an operational laundromat conveyor belt, and books that will soon be available to check-out on loan. Each design element was thoughtfully considered for functionality and authenticity with an elevated twist, such as the recognizable tile floors of a laundromat with a unique colorway.

an ever-evolving canvas for events and apparel

The store is situated within the newly launched KidSuper World, a sprawling 10,000 square foot space that includes the retail storefront, an art gallery, photography and screen printing studios, podcast studio, private bar, and offices. Future phases will see the addition of a recording studio, café, and soccer field on the property’s rooftop. Within this, DE-YAN and KidSuper, both experts in challenging traditional norms, have created a retail space that sits as an ever-evolving canvas that not only showcases the brand’s dynamic collaborations but also facilitates seamless transformations to accommodate new launches and events. This adaptability is both functional, as well as a statement about the brand’s commitment to innovation and its pulse on the zeitgeist of fashion culture.

‘I’ve spent years dreaming about what a KidSuper store would look like. I’ve had so many ideas – big and small, but first and foremost, I wanted it to be a world our community could immerse themselves in, to have fun, feel joy and to be inspired,’ says Founder of KidSuper, Colm Dillane. ‘I’ve always loved the experience of visiting a retail store. There’s a sense of excitement and energy that comes from it, that you just can’t get when shopping online. I wanted to give that experience to our community but in a bigger and more sensorial way.’
