The Deconstructed House, designed by INNOCAD Architecture, is a private residence located in the scenic outskirts of Linz, Austria. Commissioned by an entrepreneur and art collector, the steel-clad dwelling is designed to integrate the historic context with a contemporary design sensibility. The existing environmental conditions on site, including stone walls, a cellar structure, and towering trees, were carefully preserved with respect for the natural context. Through a thoughtful deconstruction of volume, the house harmonizes with the scale of neighboring family homes while offering distinct spaces and gradual interior-exterior transitions.

fitting the new house into the existing context

Nestled in the hilly terrain, INNOCAD Architecture’s Deconstructed House embraces the existing masoned structures and two sprawling trees, defining its boundaries. By dismantling the overall scope and breaking it into smaller parts, the architects blend the new building organically with the surrounding environment. This expansion allows for the creation of spaces with unique qualities that cater to functional requirements. The entrance is located in the vertical-oriented section, housing guest quarters and a garage, with an exterior canopied staircase leading down to the courtyard, linking the backyard with the front garden.

deconstructed house: interwoven steel volumes

INNOCAD Architecture composes its Deconstructed House of three interwoven volumes — a vertical-oriented section, a horizontal-aligned section, and a floating section. The transition between these volumes is tension-filled, responding to the gentle slope of the terrain. The second volume, accessed through the intermediate hybrid space, comprises accessible rooftop areas and private living and working spaces. Additionally, a wooden terrace extends towards the third section, which features a cantilevered pool. A perforated steel facade, detachable and foldable, provides shade while preserving the minimalist design.

Design Evolution and Materiality

The architecture of the Deconstructed House is rooted in the concept of design evolution, using the preexisting vaulted cellar as the foundation for the main house. This sustainable preservation of historical structures fosters a sense of identity and integrity within the new additions. The oxidized steel facade pays homage to the industrial city of Linz, complimenting the site’s rusticated stone wall. To embrace the natural cycle of growth and decay, untreated wood elements weather with the seasons, while the metal elements are left to rust naturally, developing an authentic patina over time.

The interior of the Deconstructed House follows the tradition of a modernist exhibition pavilion. High ceilings, skylights, and floor-to-ceiling windows illuminate the space with abundant natural light, offering panoramic views of the city and the surrounding nature. A circular picture rail, designed to showcase the client’s sophisticated art collection, defines a horizon and serves as a platform for interior interventions such as built-in furniture and materials. The reduced color palette, earthen tones, and the use of wood, leather, and stone create a sense of imperfection and reflect the transience of the exterior environment.
