this stone house in slovenia has been conceived as a monolithic volume, with two wooden insertions connected internally with an interim landing. completed by dekleva gregorič arhitekti, the project involves the refitting of a compact, almost windowless volume, common to the region.

designed for a young family, the dwelling’s ground floor operates as a semi-public space, containing living accommodation that offers sweeping vistas across the rural landscape. conversely, views from the bedrooms at the private upper storey are oriented towards the sky.

apertures within the design frame specific viewpoints, with three large square windows oriented towards a hilltop church in italy to the west, a forest to the south and an entrance platform to the east. in renovating the traditional stony karst roof, with its texture and steep inclination, the design is executed as a contemporary concrete interpretation of the original building, infused with technological ingenuity.

  • Wow.. nothing not to like. I really like the way the concrete wall merges with the berm. Lovely.

  • Wonderful architecture, but one first reaction would be “Draga, zaprite žaluzije!” (Shut the blinds, dear!) 🙂
