perched on the edge of an ancient volcanic caldera in the hinterland of byron bay is a stunning one-bedroom dwelling designed by DFJ architects. called ‘coolamon house’, the design prioritizes breathtaking views and creating spaces that are protected from the weather.

a key factor in DFJ architects’ design was the elevated position of the site; ‘its prevailing northerly winds render outdoor spaces effectively unusable during summer months’,  says the australian architecture practice. to combat this, the design team planned the program of coolamon house around a central courtyard, creating an open yet protected outdoor space with a pool area at the rear.

as well as the one-bedroom house, ancillary guest accommodation can be accessed by a covered path around the courtyard perimeter. in this way, the courtyard serves to both divide and connect the different functions. there’s also a garage and office located off the driveway.

from outside, coolamon house elegantly cantilevers over the edge of the escarpment, resulting in a light and elegant architectural touch. shrubs have even been planted below the overhang to make the building appear like its floating once they grow. the one-story volume is broken up with a mixed material palette of glass, exposed concrete, blackbutt timber, and folded brass. these materials continue inside with added pops of blue and a terrazzo kitchen countertop. however, the scene-stealer of the interior has to be the floor-to-ceiling glazing that spans the entire cantilevered elevation and provides unobstructed views out as far as the ocean.
