japan-based studio DIG architects has designed the offices for a small product design firm located in the suburbs of nagoya. the concept of the design took into consideration the typical needs of the office, like computer drawing room, modeling workshop, and meeting room, etc. in order to add a special feeling to it, they decided to include various types of work spaces, not necessarily the orthodox ones, but some that would encourage brainstorming, communication, and breaks, or accidental spaces like they call them.

to realize this office, full of ‘accidental spaces’, the studio focused on the continuity of their design. first, they worked on the volume and the spaces generated both inside and outside. this two areas should adjoin each other on plans and sections. second they worked on the architectural frames, by adding a simple operating rule: making gaps, crossing over. this rule generated one-meter gaps between floors that connect the different spaces and a crossing frame that opens and mixes ip inside and outside. this discordant space resulted in the different incidental spaces that the office asked for.
