diogo aguiar studio has constructed a temporary circular pavilion, which has been designed to host film screenings. located in the grounds of serralves, a cultural institution in the portuguese city of porto, the ‘garden pavilion’ joins a reflective structure designed by depA. the design features a continuous façade that comprises four bands of vertical wooden planks. the outer elevation, which can be entered at three different points, gives way to an inner ring that provides access points to the theater setting.

the curved partitions control the amount of natural light that enters the screening area, where ‘os humores artificiais’ (2016) by gabriel abrantes is shown in near total darkness. ‘building on the cylindrical spatiality, that also emphasizes the centrality of the work on display, the design of the pavilion focuses on the construction of two concentric spaces that have distinct functions: the interstitial space and the central space,’ explains diogo aguiar. the project forms part of an exhibition titled ‘live uncertainty’, which remains on view at serralves until february 18, 2018.

Beautiful pavilion. The sun and shadows rock it.
