a twenty unit artist residence has been built in tong zhou district by dna to meet the request of songzhuang’s growing artist community. songzhuang is the largest and most renowned artist population in china. while historically they were outcasted for their politically inspired work, local developments today are being put in place to meet the alternative lifestyle patterns of this community. artist live in their studios using it both as a place to work but also socialize with fellow artisans. taking into consideration the daily activities of its residents, specific height dimensions were implemented: 6 metres in height for studio rooms and 3 metres in height for living areas. a minimalist rectangular shaped room was chosen for studio spaces while bedroom, kitchen and bathrooms areas were built more geometrically complex.

the exterior fascade is mostly dark grey concrete with a touch of orange. these colors are reminiscent of both the area’s industrial link.

site plan

the twenty units are organized like stacking containers, as a homage to the site’s previous use as an industrial outdoor storage lot.
