dorell ghotmeh tane: kofun new national stadium japan competition proposal

shortlisted for the 2012 japan national stadium international competition, paris-based dorell ghotmeh tane‘s ‘kofun stadium’ proposal takes the concept of the green roof to its most extreme definition. considering the venue’s large scale, intervention and particular location in the middle of tokyo, the design set out to create an earthen monument that would be hollistically integrated into the site, rather than a technologically foreignvessel that could be located on any arbitrary site. with the ability to be used year round with a retractable roof, the stadium consolidates all athleticand entertainment events into just one complete construct.

the canopy, referencing the century-old meijijingu-gaien forest, is made up of re-purposed structural members of the original sports complex, and serves several intrinsic functions to the project. apart from creating a natural landscape, a place of refuge in the center of the sprawling concrete city, it offers unique views and vantage points but also uses the properties of the mass to insulate the large interior space. rainwater is collected and recycled as a mist to feed the vegetation.

  • Absolutely stunning!

    bobob6932 says:
  • This one should have won! Would have given back a park to the city as well!

  • Over the top is in. Understatement is out. Zaha mesmerizes the egos of the clients. This proposal is just too sane to be realized.

    Kenneth Smythe says:
  • I’m trying to find something wrong with this idea, but I can not, it’s brilliant and a shame it will not be built.

    T says:
  • What a simply wonderful concept. I would have liked to have seen the landscaping more developed into a park for recreational use and a spiral ramp in addition to the grand stair case. Nonetheless a great project that will be adapted in the future for another project——the concept is just too good to remain only a concept.

    Kenneth von Roenn says:
  • this is a wonderful concept on many levels. i wish the designers lowered the level of the playing field some 10 to 15m which would have allowed for more walking horizontal all over the park space and roof of facility

    brian madden dubey says:
  • I like it too…but sorry, i can’t resist to say that the architect of this proposal, knowing that the main jury member is Tadao Ando, proposed something super similar to Ando’s proposal for Tokyo Olympic Stadium (2016 bid for olympics), designed as green hill as well,,,though different fauna and flaura, hoping to get the synpathy of Ando. Hummm…seems Ando sympathised with them and shortlisted them, but was hard to push them to the end.

    pdl says:
  • yuk. realy dont fit the context. Zaha all the way
