ATELIER・K Architect Crafts HOUSE in Nishigamo

Wooden House in Nishigamo by Atelier・K Architect stands in the northern part of Kyoto City, showcasing a synthesis of universality and modernity seamlessly rooted in its locale. Set along the Kamo River and against a mountainous backdrop, this residence responds to the client’s needs for a weekend retreat. Nature dictates the design, reflecting the horizontality along the river and verticality against the cedar trees of the mountains. In that way, the facade, an interplay of horizontal lines, meets the Kamo River, while vertical cedar boards define the mountain-facing exterior.

Dynamic Spatial Design forms Versatile and Serene layout

A structural corridor links the first and second floors, ensuring stability and architectural finesse to the upper level. The raised floor level of the corridor, connected to an outside deck, transforms into a bench for open concerts hosted by the owner, providing a serene retreat. While exterior walls reflect the landscape, for the interior the design team follows a series of diagonal sightlines within the continuous one-room configuration, creating a sense of dynamic movement both horizontally and vertically. Traditional elements like white plaster exteriors and a partially revealed roof structure harmonize with modern aesthetics, resulting in an architecture both universal and deeply rooted in its surroundings.
